Sex for dummies

A couple from Germany went to a fertility clinic to find out why - after eight years of marriage - they were still childless. The cause of their trouble conceiving was an unexpected one. After eight years of childless marriage, the 30-year-old wife and her 36-year-old husband decided it was time to find out why they couldn't get pregnant. They visited a fertility clinic and the doctors ran some tests which indicated they shouldn't have any trouble conceiving a child.A spokesman for the clinic said: "When we asked them how often they had had sex, they looked blank, and said: "What do you mean?""We are not talking retarded people here, but a couple who were brought up in a religious environment who were simply unaware, after eight years of marriage, of the physical requirements necessary to procreate."The couple now knows about the birds and the bees, and with some luck they will have a child in about 9 months.

Home wi-fi 'could be hacked in five seconds'

Wireless internet networks in millions of homes can be hacked in less than five seconds, a study claims today.

The wi-fi hacking means criminals can spy on the activities of families, perhaps stealing their identity and banking details to raid their accounts.

The hackers could also use the wi-fi access to tap into illegal pornography or upload and download stolen music and movies without being traced.

Security risk: According to new research, a quarter of private wireless networks do not have a password

Shocking map that shows rise of 'botnet' PC infections across the world

More than 2.2 million US PCs were found to be part of botnets, networks of hijacked home computers, in the first six months of 2010, according to a new report from Microsoft.

The firm discovered that the US leads the world in numbers of Windows PCs that are part of botnets and that Spain has the most infected machines in Europe.

Between April 2010 and June 2010, Microsoft cleaned more than 6.5 million computers of botnet infections — double the amount for the same period a year before.

After 14 years of digging, breakthrough nears for the world's longest tunnel stretching 35.4 miles under the Alps

The drilling of the longest railway tunnel in the world will be completed today, 14 years after it began.

The last few yards of rock will shortly be removed, opening the 35.4-mile Gotthard Base link through the Swiss Alps which will allow trains to transport goods and passengers to and from Italy - and shave an hour off journey times.

The £624m tunnel through the Gotthard massif, including the 8,200ft Piz Vatgira, is part of a larger project to remove heavy goods vehicles from roads in a bid to preserve Switzerland's pristine Alpine landscape.

Cancer 'is purely man-made' say scientists after finding almost no trace of disease in Egyptian mummies

Cancer is a man-made disease fuelled by the excesses of modern life, a study of ancient remains has found.

Tumours were rare until recent times when pollution and poor diet became issues, the review of mummies, fossils and classical literature found.

A greater understanding of its origins could lead to treatments for the disease, which claims more than 150,000 lives a year in the UK.

Despite slivers of tissue from hundreds of Egyptian mummies being rehydrated, just one case of cancer has been confirmed. This is even though tumours should be better preserved by mummification than healthy tissues.

Fossil evidence is also sparse, with just a few dozen – mostly disputed – examples, Nature Reviews Cancer journal reports.

Even the study of thousands of Neanderthal bones has provided only one example of a possible cancer.

And references to cancer-like problems in ancient Egyptian texts are more likely to have been caused by leprosy or varicose veins.

Researcher Michael Zimmerman, a visiting professor at Manchester University, said: ‘The virtual absence of malignancies in mummies must be interpreted as indicating their rarity in antiquity. This indicates that cancer-causing factors are limited to societies affected by modern industrialisation.’

Moment herd of cows turns on a black bear trying to make meal of grazing calf

This is the moment a herd of cows turns on a black bear after it attempted to make a meal of a grazing calf.

The bear had spotted the calf separated from the group of cows on a 2,200 acre ranch in British Columbia, Canada.

But it got more than it bargained for as the mother of the calf and two other cows charged the creature in a bloody battle lasting five minutes.

The enraged bovines took turns to stomp the bear with their heavy front feet, kick out with their back feet and crush it to the ground with their heads.

The hungry bear bit one cow on the leg and left another with cuts and grazes on its face.

But it was forced to give up under the assault and limped away with a bloodied face.

Photographer Wayne Ray captured the fight on his ranch near Fort Fraser.

Backyard inventors go head-to-head in Google's £20million competition to fly to the moon

It was once a pursuit reserved for astronauts and top-secret government officials.

But now backyard inventors are hoping to land their own weird and wonderful spacecrafts on the moon after Google launched a £20million competition.

Nasa had previously estimated that such voyages would cost more than £1billion - with some skeptics suggesting that it is almost impossible to even fly to the moon.

But since the Isle of Man government has lifted tax restrictions of space exploration a flurry of do-it-yourself voyages throughout the cosmos are expected.

Internet search giant Google became one of the first to take advantage of the tax break when it announced the Lunar X prize in September 2007.

Twenty two teams who have worked tirelessly on their strange machines will meet in the Isle of Man tomorrow to thrash out the final details of the missions.

Representing Britain in the competition is the crew behind Astrobotic, a four-wheeled silver machine that resembles a moving road sign.

Julian Ranger, the UK financier who is raising cash for Astrobotic, said: 'We believe we can get the cost [of reaching the moon] down to $50m, a price tag that will transform lunar exploration and make the moon a target for for all sorts of commercial operations.

'Part of our business plan will be to get our rover to move round the site and take a 3D high-definition film of it.

'If nothing else, it should prove to the doubters that the Apollo missions really took place.

'We hope to use SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket to get to the moon. The cost would normally be around $100m, but we hope we can negotiate a special deal for this high-profile project.'

Other hopefuls in the competition include Team Italia whose craft is a green dome supported by six spider-like legs.

America's entry, Jurban, looks like a large worm designed to negotiate the moon's rough terrain of craters with several small capsules joined together in the same way as a train.

Villagers stunned after pieces of Chinese rocket from lunar probe rain down from the sky

At first these Chinese villagers thought the two large explosions in the middle of the night were an earthquake.

But they awoke the next morning to see their village in Suichuan County in Jiangxi dotted with huge pieces of metal.

These images show the scene in their rural village after the rocket from China's second lunar mission crashed to Earth, narrowly missing crushing their homes.

Huge chunks of metal rained out of the sky after the lunar probe Chang'e II jettisoned its Long March 3C rocket on Friday night.

No one is believed to have been hurt in the incident.

China launched an unmanned lunar probe on Friday, the latest milestone for an ambitious space programme that aims to put a man on the moon later this decade.

Russian firm announces plans for space hotel

Tourists could soon be eating food designed by celebrity chefs while orbiting the earth in a space hotel if plans by a Russian firm go ahead.

Moscow-based Orbital Technologies yesterday said it hoped to fill the vacuum in the space tourism market by stationing an orbiting hotel in the cosmos.

The company has sky-high hopes that its planned Commercial Space Station can serve as a tourism hub for well-heeled travellers and offer overspill accommodation for the International Space Station and workspace for science projects.

But it's unlikely to come anytime soon - the company wants to launch a seven-room station by 2016 but may increase or decrease that capacity based on customer demand.

Kanzi the amazing ape who can 'speak' with humans and understands 450 words makes Oprah appearance

He has had countless articles written about him and has even been the subject of a book.

But now Kanzi the ‘talking’ ape has reached the pinnacle of his packed showbiz career – he has been the subject of a feature on Oprah Winfrey’s talkshow.

A 29-year-old bonobo, Kanzi is able to understand and communicate with humans and is believed to understand around 450 words – 30 to 40 of which he uses on a daily basis.

Kanzi has been a celebrity ape since the late 1980s when his astonishing ability to communicate was first discovered.

He lives at the Great Ape Trust in Iowa where expert Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh has been teaching him to ‘speak’ by pointing at symbols on a computer.

He speaks by pressing a symbol on the computer which then repeats the word out loud. Dr Savage-Rumbaugh says that he is even able to put together two-word sentences and shows remarkable invention when creating new phrases.

Oprah Winfrey correspondent Lisa Ling travelled to meet Kanzi at the Trust. On the show she told Oprah that the symbol for ‘flood’ was not on Kanzi's keyboard .

Spectacular purple potatoes taste the same as white variety

It might seem a challenge to make chips even more popular than they are, but Sainsbury’s is having a go.

From today, it is selling purple potatoes which carry their deep hue to the core.

The colour survives the cooking process to provide purple chips, baked potatoes and even roasties and mash - which all taste the same as the familiar creamy white type.

As a bonus, the spectacular potatoes are packed with healthy anthocyanin, which gives blueberries, blackberries and aubergines their distinctive tints.

Anthocyanin is a powerful antioxidant which protects cells from damage and so may prevent cancer. Consumption of it is also thought to have many other beneficial effects.

In nature there are thousands of varieties of potatoes, many having deep red and purple flesh. The new Purple Majesty has been crossed from these original strains by a team of experts at Colorado University.

Two billion-year-old riddle of life is solved as 'nature's big bang' is mapped for first time

A two billion-year-old riddle of how the basic building blocks of life were formed has been solved by scientists.

'Nature's big bang' - when two single cells fused into one living organism - has been mapped for the first time by researchers led by a team from Ireland.

Dr James McInerney, senior biologist at the National University of Ireland (NUI) in Maynooth, said the discovery in effect traced humans' oldest ancestor.

'This was a remarkable event, which appears to have happened only once,' Mr McInerney said.

'These two primitive single cell life forms came together in an event that essentially allowed nature to grow big.'

Dr McInerney said the research would help explain what gave rise to all multi-cell organisms we know today - insects, plants, animals and humans.

Remarkable: Scientists have now mapped nature's 'big bang', which is when two organisms fuse together

Global warming theory in chaos after report finds increased solar activity may COOL the Earth

A puzzling discovery has raised a question mark over the Sun's impact on climate change and could provide ammunition for sceptics, it was revealed today.

Until now it has been assumed that less activity from the Sun equates to less warming of the Earth.

But the new research, which focuses on a three-year snapshot of time between 2004 and 2007, suggests the opposite may be true.

As solar activity waned at the end of one of the Sun's 11-year cycles, the new data show the amount of energy reaching the Earth at visible wavelengths rose rather than fell.

Scientists believe it may also be possible that during the next up-turn of the cycle, when sun activity increases, there might be a cooling effect at the Earth's surface.

A further twist arises from the fact that over the past century, overall solar activity has been increasing.

If the new findings apply to long as well as short time periods, this could translate into a small degree of cooling rather than the slight warming effect shown in existing climate models. It would effectively turn received wisdom on its head.

Sceptics are likely to say the results further undermine the reliability of climate change science, especially with regard to solar effects.

New list of New Species of Insects and Animals found in the world includingTube-nosed bat which bears striking resemblance to Yoda discovered as scientists find hundreds of new species

A tube-nosed fruit bat with an appearance reminiscent of the Star Wars Jedi Master Yoda has been discovered in a remote rainforest.

The bat, along with an orange spider and a yellow-spotted frog are among a host of new species found in a region of Papua New Guinea.

More than 200 animals and plants were revealed for the first time after two months of surveying in the rugged and little-explored Nakanai and Muller mountain ranges last year.

The findings included two mammals, 24 species of frog, nine plants, nearly 100 new insects including damselflies, crickets and ants, and around 100 spiders.

A white tipped-tail mouse, at least one ant and several of the crickets, or katydids, are so different from other known species they each represent an entirely new genus, the scientists said.

They were uncovered by two scientific teams co-ordinated by Conservation International's rapid assessment programme, in partnership with Papua New Guinea's Institute for Biological Research and conservation organisation A Rocha International.

The teams explored different altitudes of the forest-cloaked Nakanai mountains, which host cave systems and some of the world's largest underground rivers, and the Muller range, accessing the remote areas by plane, dinghy, on foot and even by helicopter.

In the Nakanai surveys, scientists discovered a beautiful yellow-spotted frog found only high up in the mountains, the mouse with the white-tipped tail and the tiny 2cm frog which calls for a mate in the afternoon - unlike most frogs in the area which call at night.

Using Weather Ballon Father and son capture amazing video footage... using an iPhone and HD camera

It looks like satellite footage taken by a state-of-the-art NASA camera with a telescopic lens.

But this remarkable video was in fact filmed by an innovative father-and-son team equipped with just an iPhone and a high-definition video camera.

Luke Geissbuhler, 40, and his seven-year-old son Max, designed a 'craft' made from a takeaway box attached to a weather balloon and sent it, and the two electronic devices, into space.
Following months of research and testing, the amateur science enthusiasts launched their innovative weather balloon in Newburgh, New York, in August.

During a 102-minute flight it managed to reach an altitude of 19 miles above the ground in the upper stratosphere before the balloon burst and parachuted the craft back down to earth.

Mr Geissbuhler tracked the module, which was caught in a tree, by using the GPS system set up on the iPhone and spotted its flashing LED light.

The cinematographer and director said he got the idea for the project because he is always looking for fun ideas to share with his son.

10 Biggest Massacres in Mankind Past

Human history is a unique blend of successes and failures, victories and vanquishes and of love and war. Over the period of years, humans have fought various wars that have led to various other events that ignited more and more enmity between the people. Massacres are one of such events that have led to the death of many innocent lives and of those who started this massacres in order to the quench their thirst for revenge and for their human ego. Throughout history you will find numerous big and small massacre events that have changed the world, but these 10 are surely the biggest massacres in the history of mankind.

1. Nankin Massacre

The Nanking Massacre is also known as the Rape of Nanking where hundreds of thousands of civilians were brutally murdered and raped in the city of Nanking which was the former capital city of the Republic of China. The massacre went on for a period of six weeks where the soldiers of Imperial Japanese Army entered the city of Nanking and start killing people of China. The Nanking Massacre is considered to be the worst massacre in human history because more than 80 thousand men and women were killed, tortured and raped in a period of six weeks.

12 Drugs Used For Torture

“Narco-analysis” was published in 1943, pouring from the pen of J. Steven Horsley. On its heels came the pitch-black idea of drug-supplemented torture and interrogation. We’re talking pure wickedness here; instead of just harming the body interrogators began attacking the mind. Want examples? Here’s a few of the most depraved “torture brews” known to man.

1. Sodium Amytal

Sodium Amytal lowers inhibitions, giving the user mental clarity and the impulse to talk while offering the interviewer an unobstructed view of the subjects psyche. World War II was its debut, when interviewers begin using it to work with soldiers whom refused to talk on account of psychological trauma. Sodium Amytal, a barbiturate, would force the soldier to relive their wartime experiences and talk about them with the interviewer.

2. Mescaline

The peyote cactus can be processed into Mescaline, a hallucinogen with effects similar to those of LSD. The Nazis were first to use it during their mind control experiments, and later on the U.S. Navy gave it a go as a sort of truth serum. Both experiments failed. The Navy found that information gained from a psychotic (even when drug-induced) is unreliable. The Nazis found it impossible to control minds, even with the help of Mescaline.

3. Scopolamine

Scopolamine is most commonly known as the “truth serum”, having a remarkable track record of making criminals sing like canaries. However, not too many know the dirtier underbelly of scopolamine. It’s also a “zombie drug”, able to rob users of all free will, leaving them helpless to the wishes of the inducer. That is, if the miniscule amount needed doesn’t kill the victim beforehand.

China Mistress Attacks Wife goes to the wife’s home to violently beat her, cursing her as having no good looks nor breasts

In case you are confused, the attacking girl is the xiao san (mistress) while the girl being attacked is the wife. Some of the mistress’s more memorable quotes:

* “Look at how ugly you are! Want [good looks]? No [good looks]! Want breasts? No breasts! How are you a woman?”
* “Your husband says when he looks at this face of your’s he doesn’t have much interest!”
* “I’m going to beat you to death! How dare you compete with me?!”

New 'barrage balloon' spying on the Taliban

They may look like something from the days of the Second World War, but barrage balloons have found a new, high-tech role helping British troops in Afghanistan.

The 60ft-long drones are being deployed as hugely effective ‘spies in the sky’ to snare Taliban fighters before they mount attacks on British troops.

Bristling with sophisticated cameras, radar and electronic listening devices, the large, unmanned balloons – tethered at over 2,000ft – send live film footage of enemy activity day and night to forward operating bases and eavesdrop on insurgents’ mobile phone and radio calls from several miles away.

Other contenders for the iPad throne

Samsung Galaxy Tab

Estimated price: Around £200

The most likely rival to the iPad at the moment the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab is powered by Google's Android operating system.

Unlike the iPad, the Galaxy Tab does feature a camera on each side of the device, as well as a slot for expandable memory.

The Galaxy will allow people to make video calls. Significantly, unlike the iPad, the Galaxy Tab also has the capability to make mobile phone calls.

The Galaxy Tab has the latest version of the Adobe Flash software, which means it is capable of showing more of the video images found on the internet.

It is expected to cost significantly less than the iPad - around £200.

HP Slate / PalmPad

Estimated price: Around £350

Still to be officially announced the HP Slate from Hewlett Packard is expected to either run Windows 7 or Palm's WebOS mobile OS.

According to details leaked on line the device includes an 8.9-inch touchscreen and runs on Windows 7 Premium.

It also has two cameras - one video and one still -- for so users can carry out web conferencing. Another clue to the device is that HP has already patented the term 'Palmpad'.

Details found on HP's website boasted of a touchscreen on which someone 'could use the pen to write or draw as if on a piece of paper.'

The HP Slate was first announced in January but there has been no news since then.

Notion Ink Adam

Estimated price: Around £260

The Notion Ink Adam is unlikely to dominate the mass market but is making waves in technology circles.

Developed by little-known Indian firm Notion Ink it is expected to be launched in the US later this year or early next year at the CES consumer electronics show.

One of its main selling points is its 10.1-inch Pixel Qi transflective display, a touchscreen that will be capable of recognising six simultaneous points of contact. It is also specially designed so that it easily readable in sunlight.

As well as touch control the tablet will respond to accelerometer movement in all directions and it has a new 3-megapixel camera with a patented 'swivel' action.

Toshiba Folio

Price: £329

Launched at the IFA last week the Toshiba Folio did not manage to cause the stir that the Galaxy Tab did.

The Folio 100 features a 10.1 inch display which supports a resolution of 1024 x 600 and comes with a SIM card slot for 3G network access.

It's equipped with a rather meagre-sounding 1.3 megapixel front facing camera.

It runs a customised version of Android 2.2 as standard but there is no access to the hundreds of thousands of apps available on the Android Market.

The device also offers full compatibility with Adobe Flash - unlike the iPad.
