The prosthetic arm that amputees control with their MIND

Most modern prosthetic limbs can be considered high tech.

But Jesse Sullivan has a particularly clever prosthetic arm - it doesn't work using a motor, but is controlled by his mind.

Scientists have found a way to make the thought controlled limb by connecting the nerves from Mr Sullivan's stump to muscles in his chest.

It also gives him a wider range of movements than previously possible.

Scientists develop glow-in-the-dark liquid that helps doctors see your nerves during surgery

Scientists are developing a fluorescent liquid to inject into patients and make their hard-to-see nerves ‘glow’.

The peptide would enable surgeons to see even the most sensitive nerves instead of relying on their experience and electronic monitoring.

Avoiding these during surgery is important as accidental damage can lead to severe pain or paralysis.

Indian boy with parasitic twin growing out of his chest

Eight year old Deepak Kumar Paswaan from India will finally have a normal childhood after his “parasitic twin” has been surgically removed. The boy who became known around the world by the nickname “oktopus-boy” is born with partially developed legs and arms of his undeveloped twin growing from his chest. The boy was stigmatized for eight years; by some he was perceived as an incarnation of God, while others thought of him as the devil in the human body. In order to allow the boy to have a normal life, four-hour operation of removing his undeveloped twin was performed in a hospital Fortis, the Indian city of Bangalore in June this year and boy is recovering successfully and begins to live a normal life.

The new 3D medical browser that will make us all doctors

Not content with letting you spy on your neighbours with Street View or hover over far-away countries Google has now developed a new browser that maps out the entire human body.

Called Google Body Browser, the hi-tech 3D application has been hailed as a breakthrough in the study of anatomy that could revolutionise our understanding of the human body and even fast-track medical research.

The gadget, yet to be officially released, lets you explore the human body in much the same way you can navigate the world on Google Earth.

It is likely to be the perfect tool for those hypochondriacs who like to use Google to find out what is ailing them and who will get a gruesome thrill from analysing every last vein.

Cancer 'is purely man-made' say scientists after finding almost no trace of disease in Egyptian mummies

Cancer is a man-made disease fuelled by the excesses of modern life, a study of ancient remains has found.

Tumours were rare until recent times when pollution and poor diet became issues, the review of mummies, fossils and classical literature found.

A greater understanding of its origins could lead to treatments for the disease, which claims more than 150,000 lives a year in the UK.

Despite slivers of tissue from hundreds of Egyptian mummies being rehydrated, just one case of cancer has been confirmed. This is even though tumours should be better preserved by mummification than healthy tissues.

Fossil evidence is also sparse, with just a few dozen – mostly disputed – examples, Nature Reviews Cancer journal reports.

Even the study of thousands of Neanderthal bones has provided only one example of a possible cancer.

And references to cancer-like problems in ancient Egyptian texts are more likely to have been caused by leprosy or varicose veins.

Researcher Michael Zimmerman, a visiting professor at Manchester University, said: ‘The virtual absence of malignancies in mummies must be interpreted as indicating their rarity in antiquity. This indicates that cancer-causing factors are limited to societies affected by modern industrialisation.’

Stem cells used to rebuild 10-year-old boy's windpipe in groundbreaking surgery

Doctors have carried out groundbreaking surgery to rebuild the windpipe of a 10-year-old British boy using his own stem cells.

If successful, they believe it could lead to a revolution in regenerative medicine.

The operation, lasting nearly nine hours, took place at London's Great Ormond Street children's hospital on Monday.

Stem cells taken from the boy's bone marrow were injected into the fibrous collagen 'scaffold' of a donor trachea, or windpipe.

The organ, which had first been stripped of its own cells, was then implanted into the boy.
Over the next month doctors expect the stem cells to begin transforming themselves within the boy's body into internal and external tracheal cells.

The boy, whose identity is being kept secret at the moment, is said to be doing well and talking from his hospital bed.

Because they are derived from his own tissue, there is no danger of the newly grown cells triggering an immune response.

With a normal transplant, rejection of the organ would necessitate dampening down the child's immune system with suppressive drugs.

At this early stage, his new windpipe is still having to be artificially supported.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Professor Martin Elliott, director of tracheal services at Great Ormond Street, who led the boy's operation, said: 'The child is extremely well.

'He's breathing completely for himself and speaking, and he says it's easier for him to breathe than it has been for many years.'The procedure was a big step forward from the pioneering surgery conducted in Spain two years ago on 30-year-old mother-of-two Claudia Castillo, the first person to receive a transplant organ created from stem cells.

Ms Castillo was given a section of tracheal airway rebuilt from stem cells, but using a much more complex and costly process.

On that occasion doctors grew the new tissue outside the body by rotating the donor graft in a special 'bioreactor' before transplanting it into the patient's body.

In the boy's case, his own body acted as a living bioreactor.

The de-cellularised windpipe was treated with a carefully mixed cocktail of chemicals designed to trigger signals that would allow the tissue to grow in situ.

Professor Martin Birchall, head of translational regenerative medicine at University College London, said: 'This procedure is different in a number of ways, and we believe it's a real milestone.

'It is the first time a child has received stem cell organ treatment, and it's the longest airway that has ever been replaced.

'I think the technique will allow not just highly specialised hospitals to carry out stem cell organ transplants.

'Now we need to conduct more clinical trials to demonstrate that this concept works. We'd like to move to other organs as well, particularly the larynx and oesophagus.

'Importantly we need to think about how to make regenerative medicine a key part of our health care.'

Preparation of the donor organ was carried out in the Great Ormond Street operating theatre by stem cell pioneer Professor Paolo Macchiarini, from Careggi University Hospital in Florence.
Prof Macchiarini led the Italian, British and Spanish team behind Ms Castillo's transplant.

Last year he carried out the 'living bioreactor' stem cell procedure for the first time on a 53-year-old Italian woman, replacing part of her windpipe.

The successful operation proved that the concept worked.

Prof Macchiarini was contacted by British doctors after they ran out of options for helping the boy patient, who was born with a condition called long segment tracheal stenosis.

At birth the boy had a windpipe measuring just one millimetre across and was unable to breath.

Attempts were made to patch up his trachea and hold it open with supporting stents.

But eventually the stents eroded, damaging the aorta, the main artery taking blood out of the heart.
Moves towards carrying out the experimental procedure began after the boy's condition deteriorated last November.

In February this year, Prof Macchiarini's team selected a dead donor from a shortlist of three - a 30-year-old Italian woman.

Her trachea was removed, and stripped of its cells using digestive enzymes. All that was left was inert collagen and the 'basal membrane' which provided the foundation for cell growth.

Prof Macchiarini joined his British colleagues at Great Ormond Street on the day of the operation, where he took charge of 'seeding' the trachea with the stem cells and applying the correct 'growth factor' chemicals.

In Ms Castillo's case it took six months to prepare the transplant organ outside the patient's body.

But using the new 'bionic' technique, the boy's trachea was ready to be implanted in just four hours.

Prof Macchiarini said: 'The idea is to use the reactions of the body to make the structure living.

'We told the cells to differentiate and transform naturally into the layers that make up the airway.

'This is something that makes tissue regeneration very simple and accessible to everyone.'

He said the implications for future treatments went beyond replacing whole organs.

Damaged organs such as lungs, hearts or livers could be repaired by patching them with stem cells.

'We need to change our philosophy,' said Prof Macchiarini, speaking at University College London.

'The question is do we really need to transplant the entire organ and put the patient on immunosuppression, or can we stimulate stem cells to make it function again?'

A humble wasp learned how to use sophisticated antibiotics millions of years before the invention of penicillin, research has shown.

Digger wasps of the family Philanthus, also known as "beewolves", harness beneficial bacteria to manufacture a cocktail of drugs that protect its larvae from infection.

Scientists who made the discovery believe it could assist the development of new agents to combat human "superbugs".

The era of antibiotics began in 1928 when Alexander Fleming spotted how penicillin produced by green mould killed bacteria.

But long before, Philanthus wasps were coating their cocoons with antibiotics to fight off harmful microbes.

The insects not only evolved a method of manufacturing antibiotics, they used them in a highly effective way, said the scientists writing in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.

Just as human experts have learned to do, the wasps combine different drugs that work together to destroy many different organisms.

The German researchers found that beewolves teamed up with a type of bacteria called Streptomyces in a symbiotic relationship that benefited both species.

In exchange for having a home, the bugs produced a cocktail of nine different antibiotics effective against a broad range of harmful bacteria and fungi.

Invading fungal mold and harmful bacteria are major threats to the wasp larvae. Conditions in the warm and humid wasps' nests, which contain large amounts of organic material in the form of prey food, make them breeding grounds for infection.

Streptomyces can keep these potentially dangerous pathogens at bay.

Female beewolves cultivate the useful bugs in specialised antennal gland reservoirs and apply them to the ceilings of brood cells, said the scientists. The wasp larvae, growing in the cells, later take up the bacteria and transfer them to the outside surfaces of their cocoons.

Laboratory tests showed that the beewolves employed an advanced form of "combination medication" using nine antibiotic varieties.

Johannes Kroiss, from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, said: 'A combined treatment with streptochlorin and eight different piericidines we were able to isolate from the cocoon helps to fend off a very broad spectrum of micro-organisms.

'This cannot be achieved with a single substance. This means that millions of years ago, beewolves and their symbionts have already evolved a strategy that is known from human medicine as combination prophylaxis.'

The method exploits the "complementary or synergistic action" of two or more drugs, and is known to help prevent the development of resistant "superbugs", said the researchers.

Co-author Martin Kaltenpoth, who heads a Max Planck research group on "insect-bacteria symbiosis", said: 'We suppose that protective symbioses like the ones between beewolves and Streptomyces bacteria are much more common in the animal kingdom than previously assumed.

'An analysis of the substances involved not only contributes to the understanding of the evolution of such symbioses but could also lead to the discovery of interesting new drug candidates for human medicine.'
